Incidence of Light (2019) is an audiovisual composition consisting of raw, mechanical textures: rustles, squeaks, and growling tones that shift between abstraction and recognisable fragments of urban life. Gradually, these elements coalesce into a 360-degree perceptual field where sound, reflection, and irregularity shape an immersive spatial experience. Developing her ongoing exploration of optical sound, Mariska de Groot works with light-to-sound systems and kinetic projection instruments in which light patterns are captured by sensors and translated into sound, forming dynamic systems in which seeing and listening continuously inform one another. Situated within a lineage of kinetic light sculpture, from early pioneers such as Moholy-Nagy onwards, the work extends this tradition into a contemporary, unstable dialogue between visual and sonic perception.

About the artist

Mariska de Groot is an interdisciplinary artist working at the intersection of light, sound, and space. She creates immersive installations in which self-built instruments generate dynamic, multisensory environments. Drawing inspiration from seemingly simple historical inventions, her work reimagines these ideas through experimental approaches, exploring technology, perception, and spatial experience.
