Part 1: Fragile Resonances
A sonic encounter between Dutch and Belgian sound artists
May 22 till June 20, 2026 | de Brakke Grond
Fragile Resonances brings together work by five sound artists based in Belgium and the Netherlands who invite us to slow down, draw closer, and listen. Their practices stem from a shared sensitivity to sound as something that is not only heard, but also moves, connects, and unfolds within space.
The works stem from a fragile, sometimes barely perceptible source – such as the vibration of a chain, a whispered voice, or a play of light. Through accumulation, repetition and interference, these micro-events grow into layered, immersive compositions. What begins as small and individual unfolds into a complex whole in which order and chaos, control and unpredictability constantly intersect.
These become layered, emotional sound experiences that allow us to realise that a sum of small elements can lead to powerful changes. And that, beyond our immediate perception, there are often far more complex relationships woven into our living environment.

EXHIBITION: FRAGILE RESONANCESSO(N)R is an evolving work spanning film and instrument-making, in which sound becomes a means of engaging with and reactivating historical memory. At its core is a 1960s archive of amateur 8mm footage from Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania. While the images offer a fragmentary record of life within a colonial context, their silence points to a deeper absence. Central to the work is the Abu, a traditional Luo wind instrument historically used to announce death within the community. Through careful sonic experimentation, SO(N)R bridges temporal and cultural gaps, proposing sound as a speculative and situated act of listening across histories.

May 22–June 20 | de Brakke Grond
EXHIBITION: FRAGILE RESONANCESThe Choir of Dissonance: The Creation of the Sea (2025) is an installation that listens as much as it speaks. Whispered voices gather in space, grow louder, from fragile, fragmented utterances into a dense, collective presence. What begins as dispersed recordings in English, French, and Portuguese gradually converges into a resonant choir. Emerging from a fleeting performance and extended through processes of collaboration and layering, the work traces how individual expression can accumulate into shared force, attending to the voice as both vulnerable and powerful.

On Random Walks (2025), Franziska Windisch
May 22–June 20 | de Brakke Grond
EXHIBITION: FRAGILE RESONANCESOn Random Walks is an installation in which vibrating chains move between order and unpredictability. Set into motion by inaudible low frequencies, their shifting patterns generate a constantly evolving sonic field, where knots form and dissolve, and small movements accumulate into complex, spatial compositions.

Incidence of Light (2019), Mariska de Groot
May 22–June 20 | de Brakke Grond
EXHIBITION: FRAGILE RESONANCESIncidence of Light is an audiovisual composition consisting of raw, mechanical textures: rustles, squeaks, and growling tones that shift between abstraction and recognisable fragments of urban life. Gradually, these elements coalesce into a 360-degree perceptual field where sound, reflection, and irregularity shape an immersive spatial experience.

Piano / Forte (2018), Mike Rijnierse & Rob Bothof
May 22–June 20 | de Brakke Grond
Exhibition: Fragile ResonancesPiano / Forte reimagines the piano as a responsive, resonant system. Two stripped piano harps swing like pendulums, their motion translated into frequencies that return to the instrument through electromagnets. No longer activated by keys, the piano becomes an architecture of vibration, set in motion by the slightest touch.
