Building Responsive Worlds by mesocosm: Collaborative Audiovisual Ecosystems

How can we build a synthetic ecosystem as a responsive AV composition?

Friday, May 29, de Brakke Grond, Amsterdam
10:00 - 15:30

During this workshop, participants explore collaborative audiovisual creation through the lens of site-responsive worldbuilding in sound and image, with a focus on audiovisual eco-fictions. The workshop is hosted by sound artists Joël Lavoie, Philippe Vandal and visual artist Emma Forgues. Drawing from their collaborative audiovisual project mesocosm, the three artists will show you how sound, 3D scans, environmental data and live control can be combined into performable audiovisual systems. Rather than working with sound or visuals separately, the workshop focuses on the relationship between those two. How can we build a synthetic ecosystem as a responsive AV composition? And how can digital terrains, textures, and atmospheres emerge from speculative and environmental inputs?

Working in smaller teams, participants will explore those questions by imagining a shared speculative environment before heading outdoors to gather field recordings and 3D scans from a nearby location. Back in the workspace, these materials will be integrated into a responsive audiovisual setup.

Designed for artists, designers and curious makers with some familiarity with Ableton Live and / or TouchDesigner, this workshop provides an entry point into building synthetic ecosystems that listen, adapt and evolve. If you want to attend this programme, please make sure to get your ticket and fill in a registration form. Note that the form is not meant to be a selection process, but a way to make sure you can make the most of your workshop participation.
