About the artist
Roman Willems is an artist, musician, and developer working with sound, technology, and interaction. He creates custom software and builds his own digital instruments to explore how people experience sound and space. His work moves between performance, installation, and experimentation, often focusing on the relationship between human input and machine behaviour.
In recent years, he has been developing Environments, a project centered around a playable sound system of his own design. This instrument creates a dialogue between performer and computer, allowing both to influence the direction and character of each sound. Willems often combines his digital tools with analog instruments such as synthesisers and cassette players. By bringing these elements together, he creates work that feels both contemporary and familiar, balancing structure with improvisation.
