About the speaker
Rachael Rakes is a curator, writer, editor, film programmer, and educator. Her collaborative, research-driven practice explores moving image, experimental documentary, and alternative ethnographies, grounding aesthetic inquiry in political and social history. Rakes was the Artistic Director of the 12th Seoul Mediacity Biennale (2025). She is an Editor at Large at Verso Books, a Contributing Editor at INFRASONICA, a New York Film Festival committee member, and co-curator of Art of the Real. She also co-organizes Counter-Encounters, an initiative focused on rethinking ethnographic form.Previously, she served as Head Curator of the Curatorial Programme at De Appel and Curator of Public Practice at BAK. She co-edited the books Toward the Not-Yet and Practice Space, and her writing appears in Artforum, Art-Agenda, and The Village Voice.
