About the artist

Marije Baalman is an Amsterdam-based artist and researcher/developer, whose practice spans music, music-theatre, performance, and installation, often in collaboration with dancers and interdisciplinary performers. Her work explores the entanglement of humans and technology, the societal impact of algorithms, and questions around environmental change. Central to her approach are real-time systems in which sonic and visual outcomes emerge through live interaction between performer, audience, and environment. She works with physical computing, wireless systems, livecoding, and both digital and analog sound and data processing. In her light works, she applies principles from sound composition and synthesis. Much of her practice is built using open-source tools, to which she actively contributes. Alongside her artistic work, she is a cultural organiser, curator, and activist engaged in artists’ rights and self-organised housing. She is a member of iii and Grond and has exhibited widely across Europe and beyond.
